I spent a few days in Zanzibar to soak up its beautiful beaches and learn about its dark past. Zanzibar has been inhabited by human beings for over 20000 years and had been engaged in trade with the ancient Sumerians and Assyrians (modern-day Iraq/parts of Turkey, Iran and Syria). Stone Town, the capital, was once the largest slave market. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
